A

EU withdrawal act 2020 sailed through commons because of Boris’ 20 seat majority, any amendments made by the HOL ignored.

E.g. Fusion of powers means government sits in parliament and can control it. Blair era- promotion tied to loyalty. Whips dominated; government simply seen as a rubber stamp.

  2. Tory Rebellions- Marcus Rashford on free school meals and covid rules of 6/ 42 renewal of coronavirus act 2020.

  1. Urgent questions- a response must be given, John Bercow allowed 3000 of them- including one on deprivation of citizenship.
  2. PMQ’s opposition can ask pointed questions towards the governments policies.

  1. Planted questions - repetition and long term economic plan- I completely agree!
  2. Theatrical- David Cameron described it as a punch and Judy show- Keir starmer making jokes ‘24 hours in A&E used to be a TV show- now its his (BJ’s policy)- speaker having to make them be quiet.

  1. Tony Blair- only suffered 4 defeats because of his large majority- lots of power making decisions about millennium dome and Iraq war by himself

1- With a limited majority- executive is unimportant. Theresa May suffered defeats of Article 50 and EU withdrawal act- she lacked influence and the support of parliament.

2-Can be taken down by their party- Boris Johnson and his vote of no confidence in June 2022. Barley survived- 148 voted against him

2-Corbyn 2017-2019- earned a relatively large amount of votes despite being arguably radical.

  • Government already has inbuilt majority so will win these votes mostly and is NON- BINDING.
  • Government initial rejection of the Marcus Rashford free school meals.

BUT… eventual U-turn.
