Parliamentary work : to debate and discuss bills and current issues. To attend once a week Prime Minister’s Questions

Hereditary peers (92), life peers (600) lords spiritual (2 archbishops and 24 bishops), law lords forming court appeal
What are the roles of the House of Lords ?
Making laws, controlling the government, specialist committees (a cross bencher peer supports no party in particular)
What are the advantages of the House of Lords ?
- hereditary peers are cheap
- big amalgam of wisdom and knowledge
- peers can amend bad bills
- useful retirement home for ex MPs
What are the disadvantages of the House of Lords ?
- no peers are elected, undemocratic
- hereditary principle is indefensible
- hereditary peers tend to be old, white, rich, conservative, men.
- hereditary peers represent values like inequality, inherit privilege, wealth and the right to rule
