> 3.5 mL

What are some purulent issues with joints?
pyogenic bacterial infections
4yo girl presents with 24 hrs of right knee pain. Parents say the child does not want to walk on right leg because “it hurts”. Parents say child has been feverish past 2 days. Child does not want to play very much and activity way down. On exam, right knee looks normal. ROM shows mild pain. Ear exam shows bilateral otits media.
WHat happened?
otitis media from H influenza that spread via blood to the knee.
Pt needs IV antibiotics.
When you take synovial fluid what do you order?
gram stain
cell count w/ differential
What are the consequences of missing septic arthritis?
destruction of joint cartilage & surrounding tissues b/c inflammation breaks down tissue.
What are some causes of hemarthrosis?
trauma bleeding disorders, including hemophilia villonodular synovitis pyrophosphate arthropathy charcot joint resolving infection contamination during aspiration
What are normal levels of uric acid for a male? female?
male: 3-7
female: 2-6
What are some conditions associated with calcium pyrophosphate deposition?
hemochromatosis
hyperparathyroidism
hypomagnesemia
