Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disease of the nervous system characterised by motor and non-motor functions such as tremors (motor) and decreased sense of smell (non -motor). Parkinson’s disease is caused by a decrease in dopamine, due to the degeneration of neurons in the substantia nigra within the basal ganglia. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that has an important role in the co-ordination of voluntary movement, and regulates experiences of reward and pleasure
