Parkinson's Flashcards
What are the 4 cardinal features of Parkinson’s disease?
- Bradykinesia
- Rigidity
- Postural instability
- Resting tremor
What is the greatest risk factor for developing this disease?
Age
How can we test for bradykinesia?
Ask them to perform some repetitive movements (e.g. opening and closing the hand)
What is the best way to go about observing a tremor?
Have the patient focus on a particular mental task (e.g. counting backwards from 100)
What distinguishes rigidity in UMN lesions with rigidity in PD?
UMN lesions have velocity dependent rigidity, which is made worse by moving the affected limb quickly.
Amantadine should be avoided in which 2 groups of PD patients?
- Hx of Epilepsy
- Hx of GI ulceration
Which type of agent have been shown to be effective in dealing with tremor?
Anitcholinergic
Does true Parkinson’s disease have a symmetrical or asymmetrical tremor?
Asymmetrical
