What is statutory maternity leave?
52 weeks off (2 weeks after birth are mandatory)
When does maternity leave start?
11 weeks before the due date at the earliest
day after birth if baby is born early
automatically if off work with pregnancy related illness in 4 weeks before baby due
What is statutory maternity pay?
pay for up to 39 weeks
- 90% average weekly earnings for 6 weeks
- 90% average weekly earnings up to max of 145.18 for next 33 weeks
must give employer correct notice
How long is paternity leave?
choice 1 or 2 weeks
cannot start before birth, must end within 56 days of birth
What is paternity pay?
weekly pay is 90% average weekly earnings up to 145.18
2 days unpaid leave for up to 2 antenatal appts - up to 6.5hours per appt
What benefits are there available?
only one person can get child benefits for each child
eldest / only child - 20.70 weekly
additional children - 13.70 weekly
other financial support = sure start maternity grant, child tax credit
What sources of advice are available?
health visitor family and friends community groups online NHS advice websites and forums e.g. mumsnet charitable groups e.g. barnados, home start
Who delivers the child health promotion programme (2009)?
delivered by health visitors, midwifery staff, sure start children centres, GPs and primary health care team
What health and development reviews?
by 12th week of pregnancy neonatal exam new baby review (around 14 days) baby 6-8 week examination by the time child is 1 between 2 and 2.5 years
What are the aims of the child health promotion programme ?
helps parents develop a strong bond with children
encourage care that keeps children healthy and safe
protect children from serious diseases, through screening and immunisation
reduce childhood obesity by promoting healthy eating and physical activity
encourage mothers to breast feed
identify problems in children’s health and development and safety so that they can get help with their problems as early as possible
make sure children are prepared for school
identify and help children with problems that might affect their chances later in life
What antenatal screening is available?
fetal anomaly scan
down’s syndrome
sickle cell and thalassemia
infectious disease
What newborn screening is available?
physical inspection <72 hours after birth (hearts, hips -DDH, eyes, testes)
heel prick test 5-8 days by midwife (screens for CF, phenylketonuria, sickle cell disease, congenital hypothyroidism, MCADD, MSUD, IVA)

What is the 6-8 week check?
weight check, measurement of head circumference, general assessment of appearance, assessment of tone and posture, assessment of head, eyes, hearts, lungs, abdomen, genitalia, examination of the hips, assessment of the spine
