what is a Carpopedal spasm
muscle spasm in hands and feet esp. wrists and ankles
What is Trousseau’s sign
A sign of latent tetany, hypoxia is induced in the arm using a blood pressure cuff and if postivie the hand will form a sort of duck shape (flex wrist + MCP). It is a sign of hypocalcaemia
What is Chvostke’s sign
Tap the angle of the jaw and if positive the patient will contract that side of their face. Sign of hypolcalaemia
Causes of rhabdomyolysis
Muscle trauma/crush
severe burn
prolonged seizure
prolonged coma
What is Osteomalacia
softening of the bones often due to vit D or calcium deficiency
What is bone resorption
Osteoclasts breakdown tissue in bone to release minerals leading to calcium moving from bone to blood
What is polydipsia
Increased thirst
