Anterior neck
Posterior aspect of lateral lobes of thyroid gland
External to thyroid but within its sheath
What do the parathyroid glands produce?
Parathyroid hormone
What does parathyroid hormone do? Briefly.
Increases Ca concentration in the blood
By increasing absorption in gut
Increasing reabsorption in kidney
Stimulating osteoclast activity
How many parathyroids are there? Name them

Superior x2
Inferior x2
What are the superior parathyroids derived from embryologically?
4th pharyngeal pouch
What are the inferior parathyroids derived from embryologically?
3rd pharyngeal pouch
Blood supply to parathyroids?
Branches of inferior thyroid arteries
Also helped by s. thyroid, thyroid ima, laryngeal, tracheal, oesophageal
Blood drainage in parathyroids?
Into thyroid plexus of veins
Innervation of parathyroid?
Thyroid branches of cervical (sympathetic) ganglia
What affect to the nerves have on the parathyroid?
Vasomotor only not secretomotor
What controls endocrine secretion from parathyroids?
Hormones from pituitary gland.
