Parasympathetic Nervous System Flashcards
What is the parasympathetic nervous system composed of? (3)
centers, ganglia and efferent fibers
Where do the preganglionic neurons of the parasympathetic nervous system reside? (2)
1) parasympathetic nuclei of cranial nerves III, VII, IX and X in the brain stem
2) lateral horn of the spinal cord segments S2 – S4
What are ganglions in the head that the postganglionic parasympathetic neurons are located? (4)
1) Ciliary ganglion
2) Pterygopalatine ganglion
3) Submandibular ganglion
4) Otic ganglion
What is ciliary ganglion associated with?
CN III
What do the postganglionic fibers from the ciliary ganglion target? (2)
1) Target ciliary muscles
2) Target sphincter pupil
What is pterygopalatine ganglion associated with?
CN VII
What do the postganglionic fibers from the pterygopalatine ganglion target?
Lacrimal gland
What is the submandibular ganglion associated with?
CN VII
What do the postganglionic fibers from the submandibular ganglion target? (2)
1) Regulate secretion of submandibular glands
2) Regulate secretion of sublingual glands
What is the otic ganglion associated with?
CN IX
What do the postganglionic fibers from the otic ganglion target?
Regulate secretion of parotid gland
Where do the preganglionic parasympathetic fibers of CN X go?
Synapse with parasympathetic ganglia close/within wall of its target organs
What do the preganglionic parasympathetic fibers of CN X do?
Supply thoracic and part of visceral viscera
Where do the pelvic splanchnic nerves arise from?
Lateral horn of spinal cord segments S2 – S4
Where do the pelvic splanchnic nerves go?
Enter the pelvis through the sacral nerves
