Autonomic System Intro Flashcards
What are the structural groups of the nervous system? (3)
1) somatic nervous system
2) autonomic nervous system
3) enteric nervous system
What does the somatic nervous system collect? (4)
collects:
1) tactile
2) pain
3) thermal sensations
4) proprioception… from external environment
What does the somatic nervous system send?
sends motor impulses to skeletal muscles
What is the motor part of the somatic nervous system comprised of and what does it connect?
a single neuron that connects:
1) the CNS’s motor nuclei of cranial nerves
2) anterior horns of spinal cord
- > to the skeletal muscles
What does the autonomic nervous system collect?
1) pressure and stretch from internal milieu
What does the autonomic nervous system send?
motor impulses to glands, smooth and cardiac muscles
What is the motor part of the autonomic nervous system comprised of and what does it connect?
two neurons that connect:
1) the CNS’s parasympathetic nuclei of cranial nerves III, VII, IX & X
2) the lateral horns of the spinal cord
- > to the organs
Where do the motor neurons of the autonomic nervous system synapse?
autonomic ganglia
What are the divisions of the motor component of the autonomic nervous system?
1) sympathetic nervous system
2) parasympathetic nervous system
What is the function of the parasympathetic nervous system? (5)
stores energy:
1) reduces heartbeat
2) increases peristaltic movements of the GI tract
3) increases endocrine gland secretions
4) dilates sphincters
5) cause sleepiness
