Parasitology 2 Flashcards
Sedimentation tests
used for parasite stages with high density that won’t float readily (fluke eggs)
Baermann test
This is used for infections where larvae are the diagnostic stage (aelurostrongylus, strongyloides). It requires a fresh sample where the larvae are still alive and the larvae then migrate into water after the test sits for 8-24 hours.
what nematodes have an esophagus with a bulb?
hatched hookworms and strongyloides
do hatched hookworms or strongyloides have a bigger buccal capsule?
hatched hookworms
T/F: if you see a larva with kink tail in dogs, probably most likely spurious parasite due to coprophagy
T
If a dog is negative on an antigen test for heartworms but you still suspect them what test can you perform? what are you looking for?
a knott test to look for microfileria
a dog presents to your clinic with worms coming out of its butt that look like long spaghetti noodles (30-40cm). The owner says the dog vomitted some up earlier. What does the dog have?
roundworms
a dog comes in with a fecal sample that looks like it has small grains of rice in it. The owner says they found more of these in the dogs bed along with what looked like chains of them. What parasite is this?
tapeworms
IgG indicates a __ infection while IgM is __
IgG indicates a chronic infection while IgM is acute
would IgG or IgM be more supportive of a clinical diagnosis?
IgM
in cases of giardia diarrhea, what test should you perform?
ZnSO4 float and antigen test
what antigen tests are available at reference labs like IDEXX?
hookworm, whipworm, roundworm and flea tapeworm
