Parasitology Flashcards
What is a definitive/final/primary host?
Where the parasite becomes mature
What is an intermediate /secondary host?
Supports the immature form of the parasite.
Supports development
Some parasites need intermediate host to complete their lifecycle
What is a parametric or transport host?
An optional host
Larvae doesn’t develop but it can still survive
Uses the host as a carrier
Further development can only occur it ingested by the final host
What is a permanent parasite?
A permanent parasite spends its whole life cycle on/in one host
What is a temporary parasite?
A temporary parasite spends only part of its life on / in the host
What is a host specific parasite?
A host specific parasite can’t survive on a different host/species. Has tobe a specific host.
What is a non hostspecific parasite?
A non host specific parasite can survive on other host. They don’t need a specific host e.g. Cat fleas
Zoonotic parasite meaning
Zoonotic parasites are transferable to humans.
What is a disease vector ?
Disease vectors are disease producing organisms that transmits parasites from one vertebrate to another
Referred to as invertebrate hosts
Examples includes flees, ticks, mites and lice
What is a biological vector?
A biological vector is where part of the parasites life cycle takes place within the vector
What is a mechanical vector?
Mechanical vectors just transport diseases.
What is the veterinary name for a tapeworm?
Cestodes
What is the veterinary name for roundworms?
Nematodes
What is an endoparasite?
Endoparasites are parasites that live inside the body
What is an ectoparasite?
Ectoparasites are parasites that live outside the body
Examples of endoparasites
- Protozoa
- Helminths (worms)
Examples of ectoparasites
- arthropods ( insects or arachnids)
- fungi
- fleas
- lice
- ticks
- mites
