Parasitic infection Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 2 main types of parasites?
A
Protozoa and metazoa.
2
Q
Name 5 features of protozoan parasites
A
- Unicellular
- Eukaryotic
- Can replicate within the host
- Have short generation times
- Normally cause acute infections but can be chronic
3
Q
Which animals are most at risk of protozoan infection?
A
Young, old, pregnant or lactating animals, or immuno-compromised animals.
4
Q
Name 6 features of metazoan parasites
A
- Multi-cellular
- Rarely multiply in host, eggs excreted in faeces
- Level of disease depends on the parasitic burden
- Have long generation times
- Normally cause chronic infections
- Host immunity can develop
5
Q
What are the 2 main routes of parasitic infection?
A
Direct and indirect.
6
Q
What is meant by ‘direct transmission’?
A
Infection is acquired from the environment and an intermediate host/vector is not required for transmission.
7
Q
What is meant by ‘indirect transmission’?
A
An intermediate host/vector is required for transmission.
8
Q
Why is it important to understand parasitic life cycles? (5 reasons)
A
- How parasite is transmitted
- Where in the host the parasite locates
- How it causes disease, and at which stage of it’s life cycle it does so
- How to diagnose infection
- How to control infection
