Q
Describe the life cycle of the rumen fluke
A
- Fasciola infect snails and remain within them for 4 weeks
- Metacercaria are shed from snail and ingested by ruminants
- Juveniles excyst in the duodenum and attach to the intestinal wall where they remain and feed for 6 weeks

Juveniles cause disease. Attachment to duodenal mucosa causes necrosis, haemorrhage, erosion of mucosa.
Results in gastroenteritis, oedema, haemorrhage and ulceration.
