Parasites (Yr2) Flashcards
what are the two groups of Muscidae?
those that feed on blood
those that feed on secretions
what are some biting muscidae?
Stomoxys calcitrans (stable fly)
Lyperosia irritans (horn fly)
where does Stomoxys calcitrans lay its eggs?
in housing around dung, straw and silage
when do levels of Stomoxys calcitrans peak?
late summer (August/September) when populations build up inside and spill out onto pasture
how can Stomoxys calcitrans be controlled?
removal of faecal material and spraying barns with insecticides
synthetic pyrethroids (pour-on, eartags…) at turnout and throughout summer
where is Lyperosia irritans seen on cows?
along their back
what is the habitat for Lyperosia irritans?
true pasture fly (semi-permanent ectoparasite)
what are the main non-biting muscidae?
Hydrotaea irritans
Musca autumnalis
what is Hydrotaea irritans a major vector for?
summer mastitis
what is Musca autumnalis an important vector for?
bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK/new forest eye/pink eye)
what causes bovine keratoconjunctivitis?
Morexella bovis
what are Hypoderma spp. also known as?
warble flies
what is the rough lifecycle of Hypoderma bovis?
single eggs laid attached to hairs on lower body and legs
they hatch and penetrate the hair follicles to migrate towards the diaphragm and eventually the epidural fat of the spinal cord
they then moult through the skin of the back of the cow around May/June to mate and lay more eggs
why is Hypoderma spp. an issue?
they cause damage to hides and carcasses
what is the main chewing louse of cattle?
Bovicola bovis
