- Ectoparasites are parasites that live on the outer surface of the body
Examples: - Equine: mites, lice, flies and midges. - Small animals: fleas, flies, lice, mites and ticks

- Endoparasites are parasites that live within the body of a host
Examples: - Equine: nematodes, cestodes, trematodes and bots
- Small animals: nematodes and cestodes

What is the life cycle of a nematode?
A
- Eggs on grass
- Horse eats grass
- The eggs hatch in the gut
- Larvae mature into adult worms
- Mature worms lay eggs

What is the life cycle of a cestode?
A
- Segments passed in faeces
- Eggs released from the segment into the environment
- Eggs eaten by intermediate host
- Immature tapeworm develops n the intermediate host
- Intermediate host ingested by final host
- Scolex attaches to the intestinal wall
- Adult tapeworm in small intestines of final host
