Bacteria Flashcards
What types of shapes can a bacteria by?
- Bacilli
- Vibrios
- Cocci
- Diplococci
- Streptococci
- Staphylococci
- Spirilla
- Spirochaetes
What are the components of bacteria?
- Capsule
- Cell wall
- Cell (plasma) membrane
- Cytoplasm
- Chromosomes
- Plasmids
- Pilli
- Flagella
What is the colour of gram +ve bacteria?
Purple/blue
What is the colour of gram -ve bacteria?
Pink/red
What is binary fission?
This is where the bacteria does the replication process
What are the optimal conditions?
- Water
- Essential nutrients
- Correct pH
- Correct temperature
What is the process of spore formation?
The chromosomes in the bacterial cell replicates, a septum forms and a forespore is produced, A spore coat is formed around the forespore, then it is released by rupture of the parent cell
What are exotoxins?
Toxins are released into surrounding environment
What are endotoxins?
Part of the cell wall of certain bacteria released when the cells die and disintegrate
