Giardia duodernalis

Parasite & Disease: protozoan, flagellated. Causes Giardiasis
Life Cycle: monoxenous life cycle, DH human and RH beaver/dog. 2 stages of life: trophozoite and cyst.
Clinical: Flagyl/metranidazole causes DNA breakage and death of the parasite. Symptoms are “extreme flatulence” and greasy, foul smelling stools.
Epidemiology: Proper water treatment & sanitation, filtered/sanitized water from streams, frequent cleaning & handwashing.
