Kinetoplastids are protozoa characterized by a kinetoplast organelle- a mitochondria-rich organelle associated with the flagellum that stains very dark

Parasite & Disease: T. cruzi, Chagas disease, American Trypanosomiasis
Vector: Kissing bug, Rhodnius prolixus, Triatoma infestans; OBLIGATE blood feeders
Life Cycle: Amastigote/cyst in muscle tissue, trypomastigote in blood, taken up by bug, triggers in midgut cause parasite to transform into epimastigote (binary rep), transform back to infectious trypomastigote in hindgut, bug feeds AND defecates on site to infect next host
