What is pedophilia?
Sexual excitement derived from fantasy or engagement in sexual behavior with prepubescent children.
Define paraphilia
Paraphilias are sexual activities that are culturally unusual. To be diagnosed with a paraphilia one must engage in one of these activities for at least 6 months and it must cause impairment in daily activities.
What is exhibitionism?
Sexual excitement from exposing one’s genitals to strangers.
What is voyeurism?
Sexual excitement from observation of unsuspecting naked individuals.
What is frotteurism?
Sexual excitement from rubbing one’s genitals on unsuspecting people.
What is fetishism?
Nonliving objects are the centerpiece of sexual fantasies or behavior.
What is sexual masochism?
Sexual excitement from being the recipient of pain, embarrassment, or bondage.
What is sexual sadism?
Sexual excitement from harming or inflicting pain on another.
What is transvestic-fetishism?
Sexual gratification or excitement in heterosexual men wearing women’s clothing.
What is paraphilia not otherwise specified?
Paraphilias not listed above, including necrophilia.
What are the poor prognostic factors In paraphilias?
Early age at onset, substance abuse, high frequency of paraphiliac behavior, and more than one paraphilia.
What are the favorable prognostic factors?
Self-referral for treatment, sense of guilt regarding paraphiliac behavior, and history of normal sexual behavior.
What is the treatment for paraphilias?
The treatment is not specialized but insight-oriented psychotherapy, behavior therapy, and pharmacologic treatments have been successful.
