Is there a family pattern?
Yes. A history of enuresis in first-degree relatives is found in 75% of these children.
What is nocturnal enuresis?
Pattern of involuntary or intentional voiding of urine into bed or clothes after age 5, occurring at night.
When does enuresis occur in relation to onset of sleep?
In most cases 30 minutes to 3 hours after falling asleep.
What is the frequency of enuresis that meets the diagnostic criteria?
At least twice a week for at least three consecutive months or it must cause marked impairment or distress.
What is the treatment for nocturnal enuresis?
Behavior modification, psychotherapy for associated psychopathology, low does of tricyclic antidepressants (eg. Imipramine), desmopressin (DDAVP).
Upon resolution of enuresis what other aspects of the child’s life are improved?
- Improved self-esteem
- More confident social interactions.
What does nocturnal enuresis in adolescents imply?
Possible, in some cases, a greater degree of underlying psychopathology.
What conditions are associated with nocturnal enuresis in children?
Adjustment disorder, anxiety, oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD.
