Outgrowths of the nasal cavity which contain air

Continuation of nasal mucous membrane (ciliated columnar epithelium)

The anterior maxillary sinus is bounded by the facial surface of maxilla
Where is the posterior maxillary sinus located?
The posterior maxillary sinus is related to the pterygopalatine fossa
What are the complications that can arise with the maxillary sinus?
- complications can occur when extracting upper molars (oral antral fistula)
- sinusitis can occur
Where are frontal sinuses located?
Frontal sinuses occupy bone above superior surface of orbit, posterior to the glabella
Where are the ethmoid sinuses located?
Within the lateral masses of the ethmoid bone
Where are sphenoid sinuses located?
They lie in the body if the sphenoid bone directly below the sella turcica
What are the functions of the paranasal air sinuses?
- aid in cleaning nasal passages
- provide resonance to voice
- reducing total weight of head
- insulates brain from extreme temperatures
