paramaters: INCREASE Flashcards
What 4 factors results in population increase?
Natality, Immigration, Dispersal, Migration
What 4 factors result in population decrease?
Mortality, Emigration, Dispersal, Migration
What is another word for birth rate?
Natality
What is birth rate?
Birth rate (natality) is the natural ability of a population to increase in numbers
What does birth rate depend on?
Birth rate depends on ability of mature individuals in population to reproduce
Define Mortality
percentage decrease of the population for a given period of time or it is expressed as the number of deaths over a specific period.
How is mortality expressed for humans?
number of deaths per thousand per year
Differentiate between fecundity rate and fertility rate.
Fecundity rate: average number of offspring born in the generation per female of offspring bearing age.
Fertility rate: number of births per thousand females per year of offspring bearing age.
Define immigration. (3)
when individuals within a species move from one area into another area with the same species permanently
- individuals who move into the area and make this their habitat
Define Emigration
movement of an individual or multiple individuals away from the population in which they were born. (lack of food, water, shelter and space)
The individuals will move to another location, or population, where they will settle and reproduce.
Define ‘dispersal’
ecological process that involves the movement of an individual, or multiple individuals, or parts responsible for reproduction (seeds/larvae/spores) into a population.
Define Migration
temporary relocation of a population, based on seasonal changes which depends on the temperature and availability of food.
