Genetic Therapy Flashcards
Selective Breeding
Breed plants & animals with desirable traits
What are genes?
Carried on chromosomes; basic functional and physical units of heredity.
Specific sequences of bases on how to make proteins - which make up majority of cellular structures

Technique to correct defective genes responsible for diseases
Define Gene therapy
Technique to correct defective genes responsible for diseases
What are the approaches for correcting faulty genes? (NAAR)
1) Normal gene inserted into nonspecific location in genome to replace nonfunctional gene
2) Abnormal Gene: swapped through homologous recombination
3) Abnormal Gene: Repaired through selective reverse mutation
4) Regulation of a gene could be altered
5) Target cells such as infected liver/lung & vector unloads genmat into target cell
6) functional protein from therapeutic gene restores target cells to normal state
