Paragraph 1 - Second PEE Flashcards
Paragraph 1 Point (Second TPEE)
Nearing the end of Act 1, the realization of the witches predictions, followed by the manipulation of Lady Macbeth pushes our tragic hero into cold-blooded murder.
Paragraph 1 Quote/Evidence (Second TPEE)
“I have no spur / to prick thy sides of my intent, but only / vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself”
Paragraph 1 Explanation P1 (Second TPEE)
This extended metaphor of a horse racing towards disaster, creates images of someone who is disorientated in their pursuit of a seemingly arbitrary end goal.
Paragraph 1 Explanation P2 (Second TPEE)
The word choice of “prick” reminisces to the witches who pricked their thumb and used blood to drive their spells.
Paragraph 1 Explanation P3 (Second TPEE)
Using “vaulting” and “o’erleaps” suggests lack of control. Macbeth isn’t fully committed yet and is aware of how Lady Macbeth is trying to pull him in a dark direction.
Paragraph 1 Ending (Second TPEE)
This makes Macbeth’s fatal flaw and descend into madness and murder much more tragic than if ambition had filled his veins from the onset.
