Para 4 - further imagery Flashcards
Point
Finally, Imagery is further used to show how the speaker suffers from the grief that she experiences following her fathers death. Due to the speakers father dying when she was young, she has lived a life filled with grief and the poem helps to portray what this is like.
Quote 1 + analysis
Plath uses the metaphor βthey stuck me together with glueβ to show that the speaker has never felt whole after the death of her father and she feels like she will always be stuck in her childhood because that is the time period in her life when her father died. This quote also suggests that solutions for her grief and suffering are always temporary, like glue, this means that the speaker will always be fragile and easy to break despite attempts to fix her.
Quote 2 + analysis
Furthermore, the quote βbit my pretty red heart in twoβ is a metaphor for being broken hearted which suggests that the speaker experienced great sadness and pain after the death of her father despite her earlier experience of him. The colour red also has connotations of anger and violence which suggest that the speaker suffers with the emotions attached to her fathers death as she is swarmed by many negative emotions
