Papillary Tendons And Muscles Flashcards
1
Q
What are papillary muscles?
A
Extensions of the muscle of the ventricular wall in both the left and right ventricles.
2
Q
What are papillary muscles attached to by papillary tendons (chordae tendinae)?
A
Attached to the mitral and tricuspid valve.
3
Q
What do the papillary muscles do during systole?
A
They contract preventing the valves from inverting as a result of high pressures created in the contracting ventricles.
4
Q
What would the effect of back flow into the atria be?
A
The atria walls and valves would be damaged. The efficiency of ventricular contraction in pumping blood into the systemic and pulmonary circulations would be decreased.
