Paper Chromatography Flashcards

1
Q

Describe this technique (paper chromatography) is carried out
(4)

A

A small amount of the mixture to be studied is placee on a strip of adsorbent paper e.g. filter paper

End of paper is placed in a suitable solvent

The solvent soaks up through the paper and dissolves the sample of material being analysed

As the solvent (mobile phase) moves up through the paper (stationary phase) each of the components of the mixture is adsorbed to a different effect on the paper
