Paper Chromatography Flashcards
Describe this technique (paper chromatography) is carried out
(4)
A small amount of the mixture to be studied is placee on a strip of adsorbent paper e.g. filter paper
End of paper is placed in a suitable solvent
The solvent soaks up through the paper and dissolves the sample of material being analysed
As the solvent (mobile phase) moves up through the paper (stationary phase) each of the components of the mixture is adsorbed to a different effect on the paper
What is the mobile phase in this technique?
The solvent
What is the stationary phase in this technique?
Filter paper
Give an example of adsorbent paper?
Filter paper or chromatography paper
Filter paper and chromatography paper are examples of what?
Adsorbent paper
Explain what the end result is
The original sample separates out into it’s various components at different intervals along the paper
