Paper 3 Flashcards
Distance between each site (PHYSICAL)
4km
Title of physical investigation
Investigate the changes to the characteristics of the River Tilllingbourne along its long profile
2 Hypotheses of our physical fieldwork
1) No change in river cross profile at each site
2) No change to sediment size at each site
Hazards of the physical fieldwork and thier mitigation
- Slipping around the river - Wear appropriate grippy footwear
- Cars or pedestrian interference - River sites all far from major roads or towns
- Hay fever and other allergies - Ensure any medication is taken and brought with you on the investigation
How did we collect data on the physical fieldwork
- RANDOMLY pick a location at each site
- SYSTEMATICALLY measure 10 equidistant points across the river to measure depth
- RANDOMLY collect 10 pieces of sediment to analyse and collect data on
Pros of physical fieldwork data presentation
- Allowed us to visually see cross profiles of the 3 sites
- Allowed us to calculate a cross sectional area
- Allowed us to overlay sediment size + shape with the relationship of channel size
- ALLOWED US TO DISPROVE HYPOTHESIS
Cons of physical fieldwork data presentation
- Human error while plotting data which distorted later data such as total cross sectional area
- Y-axis and X-axis where not to the same scale so the river appeared deeper than reality in diagrams
How did we use maps to help us in our physical fieldwork
- Identifying suitable sites in different courses
- Identifying tributaries of the Tillingbourne (Friday Street River)
- Plan Suitable walking routes to different sites
River width at each site of physical fieldwork
- Broadmoor 0.9m
- Crossways 2.5m
- Shere 4.8m
River depth fact of physical fieldwork
Shere 12 meters deeper on average than Broadmoor and in some places shallower than Crossways
Shapes of rivers in the physical fieldwork
- Broadmoor ~ Rough
- Crossways ~ Asymmetrical (due to meander)
- Shere ~ Wide and Shallow (UNIFORM)
Sediment SIZE of different sites down the river in physical fieldwork
- Broadmoor 9.5cm longest axis
- Shere 4.2cm longest axis
Sediment SHAPE of different sites of physical fieldwork
Inconclusive data produced due to the subjective nature of powers scale of roundness
Primary data for the physical fieldwork
- Width, Depth, Cross profile
- Sediment size + shape
Secondary data for the physical fieldwork
- Geological maps showing rock type in each river
- OS map showing height above sea level
