Paper 2: Urban Fieldwork Flashcards
What is the urban enquiry question?
How and why does quality of life vary in Walton-on-the-Naze?
What are some urban secondary data examples?
- Census data
- Google maps (street view)
- News articles
What did the census data show?
That there was a higher percentage of deprivation along the high street
What did google maps show?
It showed evidence of some boarded up shops along the high street. It also showed well kept and newer buildings in the residential areas.
What did the urban news articles show?
The articles compared Walton (low quality of life) to the neighbouring village of Frinton (high quality of life)
What are some urban primary data examples?
- Traffic count (bar chart)
- Environmental quality survey (radar graphs)
What did the traffic count show?
Results showed the highest traffic count was along the high street because this is the main road into town and to the beach. It is the CBD and there are lots of shops and businesses here. The lowest traffic count was in the south of Walton in a residential area because these were smaller, residential roads.
What did the environmental quality survey show?
Results showed the three lowest EQS scores were along the high street. This is because it is the busiest area with the most traffic and noise. There is also not much green space in this area. The highest EQS scores were residential areas to the south of Walton. This area had less traffic, more green space and the buildings were newer and well kept.
What is the conclusion of the urban investigation?
Quality of life does vary in Walton. The centre of the town (CBD) and along the High Street has a lower quality of life due to older buildings, more traffic and noise and lack of investment. Deprivation is higher in this area. The residential area to the south of the town has quieter roads with less traffic, fewer businesses, and well-kept buildings. Secondary sources support these findings
How accurate was the urban investigation?
Traffic count shows accurate readings for the visit as it is a simple data collection technique. EQS was accurate as it was subjective views of the students.
How reliable was the urban investigation?
EQS would be more reliable if carried out by a wider age range and/or by local residents. Traffic count would be more reliable if carried out over a longer period of time and on different occasions
What is accuracy?
How close the final result is to the correct or accepted value - improved by choice of equipment
What is reliability?
Whether if you repeat it you get the same or a similar answer over and over again - improved by completing the investigation at different times
