Paper 2 topics Flashcards
what is the definition of homeostasis?
the regulation of internal conditions of a cell or organism in response to internal and external changes
what do automatic control systems do?
they make sure the internal conditions stay as constant as possible
what do receptor cells do?
detect changes in the environment (aka a stimulus)
what does the co-ordination centre do?
receives and processes the information from the receptor cells
what are examples of co-ordination centres?
- brain
- spinal cord
- pancreas
what does the effector do?
carries out the response using the instructions sent in from the co-ordination centre
what are effectors?
muscles or glands
what is the basic automatic control system?
receptor cells => co-ordination centre => effector => response => stimulus
what is the basic automatic system?
