IDIOM
A phrase that has a different meaning to the literal meanings of the words eg “I’m over the moon”
Sociolinguistics
The study of how language use is affected by factors such as geographical location, gender, class and occupation.
Code switching
Alternating between languages or dialects when speaking to achieve a certain communicative effect.
Multiple negation
A feature found in some regional accents that consists of using more than one negative marker where only one would be used in standard English
Glottal stops
A sound that is made by closing the vocal chords. It is used in some regional accents in England and is pronounced in uh- oh
Idiolect
Your own language, your linguistic fingerprint

Your language use based on your region
Phatic talk
Words or phrases that are not intended literally and instead serve a social purpose
Accomodation
The slight alteration of speaking habits to more closely match the people we are with
Converge
Where you match your language to more or less match somebody else’s
Colloquialism
An element of informal language that is used mostly in spoken communication eg go nuts instead of get angry
Social mobility
A phrase used to describe the ability or capacity for individuals to move to a new social class. Education, economic status and occupation influence this greatly
