Paper 2 Flashcards
What is Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)?
Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is a European directive covering the end of life of electrical and electronic equipment.

What is disassembly?
Disassembly is when a product is taken apart for repair or for when its no longer required.
What is virtual modelling?
Virtual modelling is when 3D CAD files are used to simulate aspects of the performance of products. Virtual models of mechanical designs such as car engines can be checked for fit and clearance.
What is Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD)?
CFD is a 3D CAD simulation tool for fluid or gas flow in or around a product. Vehicle drag can be tested in a simulated wind tunnel. Test results can inform aerodynamic improvements.
What is Finite Element Analysis (FEA)?
FEA is the analysis of stress in elements of a CAD design. It allows designers to simulate forces. Weak points are highlighted using a colour coded scale. Money and time is saved as designs can be optimised.
What is quality management?

What is a go/no go gauge?
A go/no go gauge is an inspection tool used to check tolerances.

What is fabricated plywood?
Fabricated plywood is veneers stacked together in a lamination process.
What are microelectronics?
Microelectronics are small electric designs/components. It has allowed a range of advancements such as integrated circuits (IC) becoming smaller. In 1960s, 500 transistor ICs were developed which were used in computers and music players. In 1980s, ultra large-scale ICs (1,000,000 transistors) were developed (used in laptops and mobile phones). In 2017, 10,000,000,000+ transistor ICs were developed, used in supercomputers.
What are some injection moulded products?
- water bottles
- water bottle caps
- small furniture (one-piece chairs/tables)
- toys
- enclosures for electrical goods.
What is the EC Energy label?
The EC Energy Label is:
- a compulsory scheme to indicate the energy consumption of many household appliances.
- It is a highly visible label, with a coloured A-G (now changed to A+++-D) scale to allow easier comparison and better energy efficiency levels.
- It is used for large appliances such as dish washers, fridges, boilers etc.
