Feminism on Human Nature
AGREE: Patriarchy distorted our understanding of what it means to be a male and female with gender stereotypes
AGREE: Socialist and liberal believe biology is not destiny and they want equal society - disagree on the extent
DISAGREE: Difference/essentialist feminists disagree with the androgyny of socialists and liberal
Feminism on Society
AGREE: All see current society as unfair to women not giving the same opportunities as men
AGREE: Reform needed to better society as a whole and provide equality - disagree over private sphere between liberal and radical
DISAGREE: Postmodern challenge whether gender is that important to discrimination as they consider other factors such as race etc
Feminism on State
AGREE: All see the state playing a role in giving the women equality - protecting the women of society
AGREE: Government measures are needed for equality, but disagree on how far do they go? - private and public sphere
DISAGREE: Some believe this is not far enough as some believe it is embedded into capitalism so revolutionary measures is necessary
Feminism on Economy
AGREE: Current capitalist economy does not benefit women at the moment and are scared by it’s reinforcing of gender stereotypes
AGREE: Liberals and Socialists believe that equality can be achieved through gov legislation to give equal pay and access to jobs - disagree with marxists, believe in revolution in revolution - capitalism and family is overthrown
DISAGREE: Marxists = reserve army of labour whereas liberals accept injustices exist but support reformed markets
Feminist thinkers and ideas
Perkins Gilman = Societal Pressure - Young girls are made to prepare for motherhood with the toys they are playing with and the clothes that re targeted at them
Simone De Beauvoir = Sex versus Gender - “one is not born but rather becomes, a woman”
Kate Millet = Family - goal of undoing the traditional family was the key to true sexual revolution
Sheila Rowbotham - Capitalism - women forced to sell their labour to survive and use their labour to support their family under the capitalist system
bell hooks - Intersectionality - previous feminist movements focused too much on the plight of white, middle class women who had no concern with the women of colour
