Section A: King Lear extract
Extract from King Lear will be given (from Act one because of advanced information)
Explain the significance of the scene, referring to tragic elements and dramatic methods
(25 marks)
How to answer section A
Intro + 3 paragraphs (?) + conclusion
How to answer Question 1
Introduction- establish an overview of the passage, briefly contextualize it in terms of the wider play.
Paragraphs (3?)- write about significant features present in the extract and why they are important to the overarching tragic theme
Include comments on dramatic method

Add context (divine right of kings, religion,
Things that might be in the extract to comment on
Stage directions Who speaks most/ speaks first iambic pentameter/ prose imperatives imagery foreshadowing myopic symbolism
Section B: Lear Question (theme or character)
Question on theme such as-‘The ending of King Lear is unbearably pessimistic”
Question on character such as- “Cordelia is responsible for the tragedy of King Lear”
How to answer section B
Based on the whole of the play
can argue for, against or both (question says to what extent)
consider dramatic method, tragic conventions and context as well.
Focus on the character/ theme, and bring it back to them every paragraph
Intro- respond to statement, set up line of argument
2-3 paragraphs- take example, explore the idea with key quotes, links to context and method analysis
conclusion- brief conclusion that sums up your view of the question
Section C: Two text question
Essay question linking 2 texts such as:
“Although tragic protagonists are flawed, they are redeemed by the love and care they show to others.”
Or
“In tragic literature when characters die, their deaths are always met with sadness.”
How to answer section C
Always answer on two poems and salesman
Don’t have to do an equal amount of each text
Intro- establish line of argument
3-4 paragraphs- each with a separate argument on why the statement is or is not true
Conclusion- sum up your argument, taking into account the points that you have made throughout the piece
