In England and wales what is heard in crown courts and by whom?
Serious crimes, indictable or triable either way by judge and jury
What decisions does judge make?
About the law and manages trial
What does the jury do?
Considers evidence and decides verdict
Thoughout the trial what does the judge do?
Makes sure that the jury is aware of its legal rule and what it should and shouldn’t do so the trial remains fair
What happens if a point of law is being discussed?
The jury is asked to leave temporarily
What does the judge give the jury directions regarding?
The law and evidence raised reminding them of how much weight can be given to certain types of evidence
Why does the judge make lengthy notes during the trial?
To use these for their summing up which is the final stage before jury deliberations
What is the initial request from judge to jury?
To reach a unanimous verdict but after 2 hours a majority verdict 10-2 may be allowed
What happens if the jury return a guilty verdict?
Sentencing hearing will occur and judges in crown court may hear appeals against verdict or sentence
