Paper 1 Revision Flashcards
What are the uses of energy released in respiration?
-Movement/muscle contraction
-Keeping warm
-Active transport
-Building larger molecules (making proteins/cellulose)
Does respiration release or produce energy?
Respiration RELEASES energy!!!
If a pond snail/other organism dies in the pond water in the test tube, why would the death of the pond snail cause the concentration of carbon dioxide to increase? (3)
-Snail is being decomposed
-By decomposers/bacteria in pond water
-Therefore respiration of decomposers/bacteria releases CO2
What are the differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration in humans?
-Aerobic respiration uses O2 and anaerobic respiration doesn’t (only if question doesn’t say ‘Do not refer to oxygen in your answer’)
-Anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid, aerobic respiration doesn’t
-Anaerobic respiration RELEASES (not produces/creates) less energy than aerobic respiration
-Aerobic produces CO2, anaerobic doesn’t
-Aerobic occurs (mainly) in mitochondria, anaerobic does not (occurs in cytoplasm)
