paper 1 natural hazards tectonic hazards Flashcards
advantages of living near a tectonic hazard
- cheaper housing
- very fertile soil from volcanoes (good for agriculture)
- near friends and family, dont want to move
- creates jobs in geothermal energy or tourism or minerals
- strong economy from tourism
what is a natural hazard?
a naturally occurring event that poses a risk to human life and property
what are the 3 types of natural hazard
atmospheric- caused by weather
geophysical- caused by movement of tectonic plates
hydrological- caused by occurrence, movement and distribution of water
what are the 4 factors affecting hazard risk
- population density
- deforestation
- wealth
- climate change
how does population density effect hazard risk
areas at risk of natural hazards are becoming more densely populated. the more people living in these high risk areas, the greater the probability of them being affected by natural hazards
how does wealth affect hazard risk?
- LICs may have less capacity to cope with disasters
- LICs often have more people living in areas at risk of events such as floods and landslides in settlements like slums
how does deforestation increase hazard risk
destroying large areas of forest can increase likelihood of events such as flooding, landslides and drought
how does climate change increase hazard risk?
- more volatile weather
- rising temps - increase tropical storm and drought risk
- wetter seasons can increase frequency of floods
