PAPER 1: Christianity beliefs Flashcards
what are the 4 constructs of christianity
sin, salvation, monotheism, eternal life
nature of god: all loving
omnibenevolent
omnibenevolent quote: ‘god is..’
g;god is love’
‘for god so..’
‘for god so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’
what does that quote mean?
shows gods omnibenevolence, his grace/love for humainity, sent jesus to sacrifice himself to save all of humanity & rid them from sin (opportunity for eternal life)
‘he is a god of..’ (what does it mean)
‘he is a god of justice’ underpins belief that god is just and therefore showcases the fact that he will have the power to dictate afterlife based on your actions
‘god is compassionate..’ (hamilton)
‘god is compassionate & gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love’
‘almighty beyond our..’
‘almighty beyond our rwach, exhaulted in power’
what does it mean
demonstrates gods omnipotence and also alludes to his transcendence (his power/authority is above all human comprehension, he is outside the boundaries of earth)
how beliefs in the nature of god influence christians
worship god: worthy of worship due to him creating everything (omnipotence)
hope for forgiveness for our sins: (omnibenevolence)
follow gods teachings/commandments- reflect that god is JUST (os they live a good life it will be rewarded but God has power to inflict suffering if wrong doings are commmited)- omnipotent
how the nature of god is CHALLENGED
how is evil & suffering present in the world
what does the belief of evil/suffering challenge
gods omnipotence: existence of evil must have been created by God considering he created everything and surely this suggests a clear lack of compassion towards his creation and no pure love towards humanity (challenges ‘God is love’)
what else does evil/suffering challenge
gods omnipotence: God isnt powerful enough to remove evil/suffering fromworld- implication that is god had the ability to remove it he would (as he is all loving)- considering he hasnt, lacking power
what is a theodicy
defence of God- reconcille belief in God by justifying (in this case the cause for suffering in the world)
what is free will defence
belief that moral evil is not caused by God, its an action caused by humans. Due to his omnipotence he has givenhumans free will so its our responsability to make the right choices
what is st augustine concept
fall of man (genesis- adam and eve) established through original sin- adam & eve disobeyed God allowing evil/suffering to enter the world
what are the flaws in the free will defence concept
it doesnt account for natural suffering not directly caused by humans (floods, hurricanes)
st augustine concept (developed)
loving god gave humanity free will however due to adam and eve original sin is now INHERENT and we are all now born w evil as adam and eve created disharmony on earth/triad
evil and suffering is part of gods plan- developed ‘suffering p..’
‘suffering produces perseverance- humanity needs evil & suffering to develop and actively break aqay from temptation and evil, you are not worthy of reward in heaven unless you activity decide to do good by turing aqay from evil/temptation- if there is no evil, there is nothing to prove rightheousness
what is the holy trinity
3 parts of god- father (poweful creator of all things), son (god came to earth in human form- died to dave our sins), holy spirit (acting as invisible part of god throughout the word)
‘baptise them in..’
‘baptise them in the name of the father the son & holy spirit’
why the belief in the trinity is important
central belief in christianity- understand the complxiety of god
unique but fundamental to christianity
god is present within the world today (immanent) - influences christianity to do good, gods omniscience)
CANNOT BE UNDERSTOOD LOGICALLY (dependant in faith)
