Q

respiratory

A

word repirocal means two way
infant responds to actions of another peron in turn taking
actions of one person elics actions from another
babies have periodic ‘alert phases’ signal making eye contact that they are ready for interaction
mothers pick up on their alertness around 2 thirds of the time
3 months, respiratory increases in frequency infant and caregiver pay increasing attention
lays strong foundations for attachments later
Brazelton et al describes respiratory as a dance, tow people dancing together in rhymed with each other like respiratory infant and caregiver interact between each other back and fourth

Q

meltzoff and moore

A

aim-to observe interactional synchrony on infants as young as two weeks old
method-controlled observation
adult displayed 3 different facial expressions and one hand gesture
studies behaviour of Reponses in infants
babies response filmed and labelled
results-clear association between hand gesture and facial expressions
found same findings in three year old infants
conclusion-interactional synchrony is innate

Q

tronkins still face experiment

A

mother begins interacting with baby/full attention
mother then turns away and stops interacting with baby
baby gets stressed and does anything to get attention e.g. grabbing, creaming etc
mother stops after 2 mins and turns back
baby goes back to being happy again
shows importance of babies attachment to a mother/how reliant they are to there mothers

Q

ao3 points of caregiver infant interactions

A

strength-filmed in laboratory’s
weakness-difficult in explaining behaviour from infants perspective
weakness-doesn’t tell us the purpose of respiratory and interactional synchrony

Q

role of the father

A

traditionally-mother stay at home
father goes to work
some researchers say men not equipped to form an attachment
lack of oestrogen explains why men unable to form a close attachment
some argue father takes on playmate role
some argue fathers demonstrate sensitive responsiveness and can therefore form strong emotional tie/bond

Q

Grossman et al

A

longitudinal study
babies attachment studies till teenagers
researchers ,looked at parents behaviour and its relationship to quality if their babies later attachment to other people
quality of abys attachment to mothers=adolescence
suggests attachment to fathers less important then to mothers
however, Grossman found quality of fathers play with babies also related to quality of absolence attachments
suggests fathers have more of role of playmate and stimulation and less to do with emotional development

Q

fathers as primary caregivers

A

suggests when fathers take on role of being main caregiver they adopt behaviours which have in past been associated with mothers. field filmed 4 moth old babies in face to face interactions
found primary caregiver interactions spent more time smiling and imitating and holding infants then secondary caregiver fathers.

15
Q

ao3 points for role of father

A

strength-research into role of father can be sued to offer advice to parents
weakness-researchers are interested in different research questions
weakness-evidence undermines the idea of fathers having distinct roles

16
Q

Schaffer and Emerson

A

aim-to examine formation of early attachments
method-60 babies from skilled working class families in GLASGOW
aged between 2-23 weeks old
researchers visited homes every month for 12 months and then again after 18 months
researchers interviewed mothers observed children in relation to separation anxiety and stranger anxiety
results-some support for stages of attachment
around 25-32 weeks 50% showed separation anxiety towards their mothers expected of indiscriminative phase
by 40 weeks 80% of children had discriminative attachment and 30% started to form multiple attachments
conclusion-some support of Emerson and Schaffer’s stages of attachment
suggests attachment develops through a series of stages

17
Q

what are emerson and schnaffers stages of attachemnt

A

asocial stage-babies first few weeks of life
indiscriminative stage-2-7 month babies
specific attachment -7 months
multiple attachments
remember
Amy is sugar monster

18
Q

asocial stage

A

Schaffer and Emerson did not believe entirely asocial
babies show signs that they prefer to be with other people
more comforted by presence of familiar people

19
Q

indiscriminative stage

A

babies start to display more obvious and observable social behaviours
show clear preference of being with person other then inanimate objects
usually accept cuddles from anyone
dont usually show separation anxiety when caregiver leaves their presence

20
Q

specific attachmments

A

start to show anxiety directed towards strangers especially when attachment figure is absent
separation anxiety- anxiety when separated from there attachment figure

21
Q

multiple attachments

A

extend separational and stranger anxiety to multiple attachments with people they spend regularly spend time with
these relationships called secondary attachments
