Paper 1 - Acids, bases and salt preparations Flashcards
Describe the use of litmus paper to distinguish between acidic and alkaline solutions
- Litmus paper tests whether a solution is acidic or alkaline because it changes colour at about pH7.
- It is red in acidic solutions, purple in neutral solutions and blue in alkaline solutions
Describe the use of phenolphthalein to distinguish between acidic and alkaline solutions
Phenolphthalein will change from colourless in acidic solutions to bright pink in alkaline solutions
Describe the use of methyl orange to distinguish between acidic and alkaline solutions
Methyl orange changes from red in acidic solutions to yellow in alkaline solutions
What are the pH values for strongly acidic?
0-3
What are the pH values for weakly acidic?
4-6
What is the pH value for neutral?
7
What are the pH values for weakly alkaline?
8-10
What are the pH values for strongly alkaline?
11-14
Describe the use of universal indicator to measure the approximate pH value of an
aqueous solution
The universal indicator contains a useful combination of dyes that will give off different colours for different pH values
What colour is universal indicator for a strong acid?
Red
What colour is universal indicator for a weak acid?
Orange-Yellow
What colour is universal indicator for a netral solution?
Green
What colour is universal indicator for a weak alkali?
Blue
What colour is universal indicator for a strong alkali?
Indigo
Describe acids in terms of ions
Acids are a source of H+ions
