It is a
circular tempel built originally by adjoining baths by Marcus Agrippa
consists of 3 parts
1) An octostyle porch
2) A rectangular connecting block
3) A domed rotunda
the dome is
43m high
the octostyle porch has
8 granite corinthian columns in front and 2 groups of 4 in the back
there are 3 niches at the back originally held statues of Agrippa, Augustus and Julius Caesar
Also an inscription and a pediment which held a statue of the battle of the titans
The doors
of the rotunda are made of bronze
inside
there are recesses called exedra
each exedra has 2 fluted corinthian columns and 2 fluted corinthian pilasters
weight was diverted form the exedra
by concealed relieving arches buried in the wall above
The dome
was covered by a dome 42 m in diameter covered in a coffered ceiling
each coffer contained a bronze star resembling the cosmos
At the centre the was a circular opening called the oculus 8m wide. Main source of light in the building
also reduced the weight of the roof
