what is pancreatic insufficiency and what can it cause?
-reduced secretion of pancreatic enzymes into the duodenum. Can be due to pancreatitis, CF, pancreatic tutors, coeliac disease, gastro-intestinal resection and may lead to maldigestion and malnutrition
what is the treatment for pancreatic insufficiency? what it includes and when to take it?
-pancreatic enzyme replacement (pancreatin)
-pancreatin: lipase, amylase and protease which can digest fats, carbs and proteins so it can be absorbed
-take with meals and snack to prevent early breakdown
what is the treatment for pancreatic insufficiency for those with cystic fibrosis?
-fibrosing colonopathy at high dose pancreatin
-CF patient shouldn’t exceed 10,000 units/kg/day of lipase
-report any new abdominal symptoms
what is the disadvantage for ppl with pancreatic insufficiency?
-levels of fat-soluble vitamins and micronutrients should be monitored
-give supplements when needed
