Pancreatic/Gi function Flashcards
What is the pancreas?
large gland located outside GI system
What is the function of the pancreas?
endocrine and exocrine glands
What is the main role for the GI system?
digestion of starch, lipids, proteins, carbs, nucleic acids into molecules than can be absorbed and used in the body
What does the endocrine do?
release hormones
What does the exocrine do?
release enzymes
What controls pancreatic activity?
secretin and cholecystokinin (CKK)
What does secretin produce?
bicharbonate rich pancreatic fluid that has high alkalinity which protects intestinal lining
What does CCK help stimulate?
further release of digestive enzymes and combines with fats and lipids in duodenum
What does amylase help with?
aids in starch and glycogen breakdown
What does lipase do?
Breaksdown trigs
Where is amylase detected?
urine
What is increased in acute pancreatisis?
AMY
When can AMY also be eleveated?
hepatitis, cirrhosis, mumps, salivary gland irritation, renal insufficiency, intestinal obstruction
When will urine amylase be increased?
With true increase in serum amy
What are the isoenzymes
Salivary and Pancreatic
