Pancreas Flashcards
The hormone-producing cells of the pancreas are the
islets of Langerhans
The two cell types in the islets of Langerhans are
alpha and beta
Alpha cells secrete
glucagon
Beta cells secrete
insulin
Insulin makes blood glucose go
down
Glucagon makes blood glucose go
up
Insulin firstly makes glucose go down by
promoting the uptake of glucose from the blood into liver and muscle cells
Insulin secondly makes glucose go down by
accelerating glucose conversion into glycogen
Insulin can also promote the conversion of excess glucose into
fat
The stimulus for insulin release is
raised blood glucose level
Rising blood glucose level is detected by
beta cells of the islets of Langerhans
The stimulus for glucagon release is
lowered blood glucose level
Lowered blood glucose level is detected by
alpha cells of the islets of Langerhans
Glucagon increases blood glucose level by promoting
glycogenolysis
Glucagon also increases glucose level by promoting
gluconeogenesis
