Adrenals Flashcards
The adrenals are located just above the
kidneys
The outer part of the adrenal is the
cortex
The inner part of the adrenal is the
medulla
The family of hormones secreted by the cortex are the
glucocorticoids
The hormones secreted by the medulla are
adrenaline & noradrenaline
The adrenal cortex is stimulated to secrete its hormones by
adrenocorticotropic hormone [ACTH]
The best known glucocorticoid is
cortisol
Cortisol ensures cells have enough energy by promoting
glycogenolysis
Cortisol also assists in maintaining blood glucose by
stimulating muscle breakdown to amino acids
Amino acids can be converted into glucose in the
liver
The creation of glucose from non-carbohydrate sources is called
gluconeogenesis
Cortisol can also provide muscle cells with energy from
fat breakdown
Cortisol levels rise during
prolonged stress
Adrenaline and noradrenaline are released in
fight-or-flight situations
Adrenaline and noradrenaline produce the same effects as
sympathetic stimulation
