How do you palpate for T1-4?
Palpate up one interspace and over two finger widths
How do you palpate for T5-8?
Palpate up two interspaces and over two finger widths
How do you palpate for T9-12?
Palpate up on spinous process and over one finger width
How do you palpate L1-L3 mammillary processes?
Find T12, palpate 1 SP inferiority to L1 SP.
*Go up one interspace between L1-T12 and palpate out 1 finger width.
How do you palpate L4-L5 mammillary processes?
Find iliac crest, move to midline (L4 on male)
*Go up 1 interspace and out laterally two finger spaces
Explain how to find the piriformis muscle. Explain landmark location.
Ischial Tuberosity - First, ask pt if they can point out on right or left side which bone you set on. Then replace contact with your digital contact.
Greater Trochanter - Go to lateral portion of leg and palpate up until finding greater trochanter.
Piriformis Muscle - The area or triangle made from the PSIS, ischial tuberosity, and greater trochanter, has the piriformis muscle going right down the middle.
- Muscle work of piriformis: Ask if it’s ok to elbow on piriformis then put elbow on muscle grab ankle and lift up, and rotate pt leg externally and internally.
How to you find the articulate pillars of C2 and C3?
Find EOP, go inferiorly to meet C2 SP, then 1 finger width lateral
How do you find the C4-C7 articulate pillars?
Find C2 and count down from there to C6, go up 1 interspace and lateral one finger width
If a pt is laying prone the inferior edge of the scapular would medially be in line with what Thoracic?
T6
When standing or sitting the inferior edge of the scapula would medically align with what T?
T7
If you find the last rib and go medially, what vertebrae would you run into?
L1 or L2
*to find T12 you must follow the rib angle
