Palmer(1975) Flashcards
How many participants? Where?
64 participants, lab experiment
Method: 2 points
•Shown a visual scene for 2 seconds
-With a provided context
•Shown an object to identify
-MailBox,Loaf,Drum
How did they get the instructions
Written instructions
Indecent Variable 1
Appropriate;recognising a loaf after seeing a kitchen scene
Independent variable 2
Appropriate-Similar Object; recognising a mail box which looks like a loaf after looking at a kitchen scene
Independent variable 3
Inappropriate;different objects; recognising a drum after a kitchen scene
Independent variable 4
NO CONTEXT
a repeated measures design
all of the people were tested in all of the conditions (4)
Dependent variable
The amount of objects that were correctly identified
Results/Findings
most objects were correctly identified after seeing appropriate context, and the least after inappropriate context
Conclusion
Expectation affects perception. People have a perceptual set due to the context which affects accuracy when recognising objects
Strength 1
•There were no time differences and all contexts and objects were looked at for the same amount of time
Strength 2
•The participants were given instructions so they knew what to do
Strength 3
2 participants forgot their glasses so their data wasn’t collected as it was unreliable
Weakness 1
•The instructions meant that the participants may have tried harder
because they knew they were being tested
