palm oil and orangutans Flashcards
what’s palm oil?
Palm oil is a resource created off of the fruit of palm oil trees. It’s a very efficient and widely used vegetable oil. Indonesia and Malaysia make, together, almost 85% of the world’s palm oil.
how are orangutans affected?
The primary threat to orangutans is the extensive loss of their natural habitat due to logging, agricultural expansion (particularly palm oil plantations), and infrastructure development. Deforestation fragments their habitats, isolating populations and limiting their ability to find food and mates.

responses to palm oil plantations
WWF - works with government to introduce laws to limit plant oil plantations, set up cooperatives in Tawau, Sabah to support small growers into becoming RSPO certified (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil)
GREENPEACE - exposed how large brands were using “dirty” palm oil (thanks to this many brands are committed to not using dirty palm oil by 2030)
