Paley's Design Argument Flashcards
Paley’s design argument
Form
Supposedly derived from analogy- inductive, though different thinkers see it as deductive, inductive or abductive
Paley’s design argument
Argument
P1) A watch has features of spatial order and purpose
P2) Anything with these features must have been designed by a designer
P3)Therefore a watch must have been designed by a designer
P4) Every feature of spatial order an prison that existed in the watch also existed in nature but on a wondrous scale
C1) Therefore, nature has been designed by a wondrous designer
C2) Therefore, God exists
Paley’s design argument
Reasoning
Though experiment= coming across a stone, kicking stone and being asked how stone got there; ‘For all I know it’s been there forever’
-Suppose he found a watch on the ground and was asked the same question
Paley says the same answer isn’t satisfactory as when we look ay the watch it has these properties:
-The watch has several parts= complex object
-These parts have been made with exactly the right materials, appropriate for their action= any minor changes would mean purpose wasn’t achieved
-These parts work together for a purpose= produce regulated motion
Indicators of design- showing distinct spatial order and purpose leads Paley to the conclusion that the watch has a maker who designed it
